4C's: Cut
PostBy Avi Paz Group At 01.08.2010
The cut of a diamond maximizes its ability to reflect and refract light and usually refers to the specific arrangement of facets. Dozens of cuts have become standard offer, including some enduring favorites: the princess cut, the square cut, and the round brilliant cut, to name a few of the best-known.
The Avi Paz Group has expanded the number of diamond cuts available with its patented PrinceCut® design. The Prince Cut is an innovative modification of the classic emerald cut that features cropped corners and stepped sides, giving the stone greater brilliance.
Other factors considered in diamond cut include:
Proportion: The proper length-width-depth ratio of the diamond cut allows light to pass through the diamond with its full spectrum intact. Marcel Tolkowsky's ideal cut provides standard, mathematically-based ratios of table size, diameter, grown, pavilion, culet, girdle, and depth.
Standard proportions for cut diamonds:
Shape Proportion
Round 1.00
Asscher 1.00-1.05
Cushion 1.00-1.30
Emerald 1.30-1.40
Heart .90-1.10
Marquise 1.75-2.25
Oval 1.33-1.66
Pear 1.45-1.75
Princess 1.00-1.05
Radiant 1.00-1.05
Polish: The finest diamond cutting in the world can be rendered moot by poor polishing, just as dirty windows can make a beautiful landscape appear dull and dreary. Polishing should leave all a diamond's facets perfectly smooth and flat.
Symmetry: All of a diamond's facets are in the right proportion to each other and to the size of the diamond itself and are all properly aligned. Properly aligned facets facilitate the ideal scintillation of a given diamond.
