Fancy Colored Diamonds

The standard color grading scale used for white or colorless diamonds accounts for a certain degree of yellow or brown, but true colored diamonds – known as "fancies" – are rare and prized.

Brown Diamonds: Most brown diamonds are extracted from the Argyle Mine and comprise shades ranging from champagne to cognac. Light pinkish-brown diamonds are called "cinnamon;" deep yellow brown diamonds are called "honey;" and brown diamonds of a deep olive shade are referred to as "clove."

Yellow Diamonds: Yellow diamonds are mined all over the world. Diamonds of intense yellow shades – generally mined in Sierra Leone – take their strong hue from the presence of nitrogen scattered as single atoms throughout the diamond. True yellows account for less than 0.1% of all naturally occurring diamonds.

Pink Diamonds: Naturally occurring large pink diamonds are rare. The Argyle Mine is the world's most prolific producer of pink stones, and most Argyle pink diamonds average a single carat in weight.

Black Diamonds: Black diamonds, being formed from millions of crystals stuck together, have a fairly porous structure and contain trapped gas bubbles. Black diamonds are usually found in alluvial deposits and never in kimberlite pipes, and are mostly mined in the Central African Republic and in Brazil.

Blue Diamonds: Naturally occurring blue diamonds account for less than 0.1% of all diamonds, nearly all of them extracted from the Cullinan Mine. Irradiation can induce a blue tint into a colorless diamond, but Avi Paz Group does not carry artificially enhanced diamonds. Blue diamonds are unusual in that they are semi-conductors, rather than non-conductors, of electricity.

Green Diamonds: Green diamonds get their color from exposure to radiation. Stones exposed to alpha radiation will take on only a superficial green color. Beta or gamma radiation penetrates more deeply, giving the diamond a more complete green color.

Red Diamonds: Fewer than 20 certified red diamonds are known to exist in the world, and none of the three largest red diamonds in existence weighs more than 5.11 carats.
